Well, we’re in the thick of the ! This is week 3 of the Jeffrey Court Spring Renovation Challenge! This week’s update is quick – we’ve been prepping and troubleshooting before we can FINALLY start with the fun part: actually tiling and watching this bathroom come together!
If you remember, we left off last week after grinding down thefloors to get rid of the old thin-set mortar. So now, we are onto prepping everything to start rebuilding!
First, we had to re-level the tub, which has been slanted away from the drain since we moved into the house. We ended up making a last-minute decision to buy a new tub because this one was old and discolored and getting to where we needed to in order to relevel it was going to be a major hassle because we couldn’t get the tub out in one piece without having to do a lot more demolition and spending a ton of time trying to clean old grout and caulk off the old tub. SO, with a new tub ringing in at only $139, we figured this was the best way to go.
So we sawed out the old tub, leveled the floor and put in the new tub, and framed it out to prep if for tiling.
We also painted the walls before we had to worry about dropcloths or getting the paint on things.
When we were grinding down the floors, some of the areas ended up un-level, so we filled in those holes and divots with thin-set mortar to create a level base for when we start tiling.
Finally, we hung up new backer board around where the shower was. But – as with any renovation project – we screwed up…
We forgot to put in the new insulation (remember – we ended up taking out the insulation because we found mold behind the shower drywall) behind the new backerboard. So, we had to take it back down, put in the insulation and then hang the backerboard back up again. The first of many goofs, I’m sure.
